On November 1 and 2, UpGyres was presenter and panellist on Material Futures: Innovation in Textiles at the 2016 World Ethical Apparel Roundtable, Canada’s Sustainable Business Conference for the Apparel & Textile Industry.
UpGyres presentation on recovering microfibres from wastewater discharges and utilizing them as raw materials was received warmly and positively.
By their own admission, we blew a few minds that had no idea about micro fibre shedding into effluent and its polluting consequences in freshwater and marine ecosystems.
We gathered interest from certification groups to apparel manufacturers to large retailers.
My take away from this first-time attendance to WEAR is that education, awareness and action about microfibre pollution of our waters from the fashion, apparel and textile industry is timely, much needed and very welcomed.
