RECOVER MICRO, MESO AND MACRO PLASTIC RESOURCES FROM THE GLOBAL OCEAN

WHY: We can recover plastic pollution floating on the surface and in the water column of the circular oceanic currents and convert it into valuable products.

HOW: We use bio-robots to extract the plastic and bring it back to a Floating, Eco-Extraction, Upcycling, Offloading vessel (FEUO) where it is studied and processed at high seas.

WHAT: A new venture that works jointly with industry programs to design and build biologically intelligent plastic recovery robots and zero emissions, zero fuel, zero ballast water, plastic processing and transport vessels.

The Problem

WE EAT OUR OWN PLASTIC WASTE!

There are 5 trillion pieces of waste plastic weighing 269,000 metric tons or 269 million kilos or 593 million pounds floating on the surface and in the water column of the world’s oceans.

Marine life ingests these plastics and perish.

Fish ingest plastic and end up on our plates.

The Solution

UpGyres has created an integrative approach to RECOVER, manage, treat and upcycle plastic waste from the oceans.

UpGyres is designing and developing the technology, equipment, and methodology to collect plastic pollution from the surface and water column of the global ocean with bio-robots.

UpGyres will integrate oceanic plastic harvesting with zero-emission, zero-fuel sea-to-port transport.

Regenerative Ocean Plastic Recovery Consortium Goals

Immediate Goals (within 1 year)

Milestone #1 – Duration 9 months. Develop and test Bio-Robot in the 3D environment, pools and off the Pacific coast of BC, Canada.

Short Term Goals (within 3 years)

Milestone #2 – Duration 9 months. Test the Bio-Robot in the Salish Sea and at the South Pacific Gyre Plastic Field.

Milestone #3 – Duration 9 months. Develop a preliminary feasibility study in which the company will integrate the Bio-Robot on board an ocean faring vessel.

Milestone #4 – Duration 9 months. Launch a large-scale commercial feasibility and develop a commercial proof of concept.

Medium Term Goals (within 5 years)

Build, launch and operate the first zero emission, zero fuel Floating, Eco-Extraction, Upcycling, Offloading vessel (FEUO)  and a flotilla of plastic harvesting Biointelligent-Biomimetic Robots.

Long Term Goals (within 10 years)

Expand operations to other ocean plastic deposits.

James McFarlane, Executive Vice President of ISE Ltd. (International Submarine Engineering) Port Coquitlam Canada. He is also an experienced ROV pilot and has logged over 10,000 hours of piloting time, primarily for oceanographic research.

Jordan McRae, Founder of Octo23 Technologies is an Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineer, Inventor, and Entrepreneur. In 2008, Jordan moved to Hong Kong to establish an R&D facility for Humdinger Wind Energy a modular non-turbine wind energy generator.

Dr. Jindong Liu Founder of Global Tool Support Ltd., works in the field of Biologically Inspired Mobile Robotics. His expertise is on mechanical design and embedded system design and control. Dr. Liu’s work includes bio-mimetic mobile robots, including the modelling, simulation, sensor fusion, pattern recognition, and unsupervised learning of robots.
