Captain Adrian Midwood
Location: Tahiti, Polynesia
Public Profile: www.linkedin.com/pub/adrian-midwood
Adrian will be the Captain for our proof of concept stage where UpGyres will have a presence in the Pacific Islands collecting real-time data on the feasibility of collecting floating and submerged waste plastic.
Mr. Midwood has spent his entire adult life traveling the world. He eventually based himself in the South Pacific Islands working on large and small boats as cook, deckhand, engineer, and moving up to captain. After becoming Captain, Adrian took his experience, bought the S.V. Moana sailing boat, and started Leisure Activist Group; a company based around educational charters aboard yachts, as well as private coaching for action sports.
After many years working in and amongst the islands, Adrian realized the need for initiating larger uses of renewable energy technologies and waste management. This led him to become the Captain and Co-coordinator of the Green Island Project Ocean Ambassador Program. This ongoing program is to collaborate in education to design and promote next-generation, sustainable, municipal-scale utilities on a model that incorporates proven and emerging technologies to reduce fossil fuel dependency, create jobs, close landfills, and anchor renewable energy systems in South Pacific Islands.
In 2012, Mr. Midwood took his passion to the next level and led a team on board the solar paneled, sailing boat Moana across half the Pacific Ocean on an awareness campaign, and to raise funds for continuing waste management education in the islands, as he, and a group of friends Kite Surfed and Stand-Up-Paddled (SUPing) from Tonga to Australia.
Adrian has teamed up with Upcycle the Gyres Society in the role of Pacific Marine Logistics Coordinator and Captain. He will be engaging the S.V. Moana to assist UpGyres on the development and proof of concept stage; offering his wide breadth of nautical experience, assessing the production rate of plastic waste between islands, and what waste management systems are in place to give UpGyres an idea of how to proceed. He will also be guiding UGS at sea operations while testing plastic harvesting methods in the South Pacific Gyre, and providing his expertise in international relations with Pacific Island communities.
