Cooper Kupp injury update: Sean McVay ‘kicking himself’ after Rams WR suffers ankle injury late in loss vs. 49ers

The Rams lost to the 49ers 31-14 in Week 8 to fall to 3-4 on the season. If that wasn’t bad enough, one of their best players may have suffered an injury late in the contest.

Wide receiver Cooper Kupp left the field with just over a minute left to play after suffering an apparent leg injury.

Kupp caught a 6-yard pass from Matthew Stafford but was brought down awkwardly on the play. He was bent slightly backward and remained down on the field after the play.

Kupp was able to walk off the field under his own power. After that, the Rams called a couple of running plays to run out the clock. No in-game status was provided regarding Kupp.

But Rams coach Sean McVay did have an update after the game. He also said that he was upset with himself for leaving Kupp in after the contest had already been decided.

How long is Cooper Kupp out?

Kupp himself offered what appeared to be good news. He reported that initial indications are that he had “dodged a bullet” with the injury. He was seen walking without a limp in the Rams’ locker room, per Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times.

And on Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Kupp is expected to play in Week 9 despite soft-tissue swelling in his ankle.

Still, it’s unclear whether Kupp will be limited by his injury. If he can’t play a full complement of snaps, Allen Robinson, Ben Skowronek and Van Jefferson would likely see increased run.

Kupp recorded eight catches for 79 yards and a touchdown before exiting Sunday. The reception on which he was injured was his lone catch of the second half.
