Is Dalton Schultz playing on Monday night? Fantasy injury update for Cowboys-Giants Week 3 Monday Night Football (Updated)

Given the relatively sorry state of the tight end position in fantasy football, anytime a top-10 TE is “questionable” heading into a game, it’s a big deal. When it’s a prime-time game, it’s an even bigger deal. That’s the situation this week with Dalton Schultz (knee), who wasn’t expected to play on Monday night against the Giants when he first suffered the injury, but apparently now has a realistic chance of suiting up. Knowing the latest updates is absolutely crucial ahead of locking in your Week 3 start ’em, sit ’em decisions.

We’ll continue to update this article with news on Schultz up until the official active/inactive report comes out on Monday around 6:45 p.m. ET.

Is Dalton Schultz playing Monday night?

UPDATE: NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Monday afternoon that Schultz will test his knee in pre-game warmups, but it “sounds unlikely” that he’ll play.

UPDATE 2: Schultz is officially OUT.

After starting the week with two DNPs, Schultz (knee) got in a limited session on Saturday and is officially “questionable” for Monday night’s game against the Giants. Even though Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones and coach Mike McCarthy expressed optimism about Schultz’s injury early in the week, most still expected him to miss at least one game.

He still might, and the mere chance of Schultz being inactive is why you probably shouldn’t wait around for him if you can find a decent streamer from the Sunday games. There are plenty of widely available options, including Logan Thomas (vs. Eagles), Evan Engram (@ Chargers), Tyler Conklin (vs. Bengals), and Hayden Hurst (@ Jets).

If you choose to wait for Schultz, the good news is both of the starting TEs in Monday’s game (Daniel Bellinger, Jake Ferguson) are very available. We’d prefer Ferguson because the Cowboys more consistently target their TEs, but Bellinger scored last week, so he has some upside. Just make sure you have one of these guys on your roster in advance to guard against your opponent stashing them just to block you.

If Schultz is out there, then clearly the Cowboys feel he’s healthy enough to use normally (or close to it). That alone gives him TE1 upside, especially in PPR leagues. But, again, you’re taking a risk waiting for him, especially considering how pessimistic most were early in the week about his chances for suiting up in this game.
