The Chicago White Sox are expected to hire Pedro Grifol as their next manager, sources told ESPN’s Buster Olney.
An announcement from the White Sox is expected to come later this week.
Grifol has been with the Kansas City Royals since 2013, serving as the team’s bench coach last season.
The 52-year-old will replace Tony La Russa, who stepped down as White Sox manager in October because of health issues.
Grifol spent nine seasons in the minors as a player before his coaching career began. He never played higher than Triple-A.
Miguel Cairo, who served as interim manager during La Russa’s absence, was also interviewed for the position, as were Houston Astros bench coach Joe Espada and New York Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza.
A number of White Sox coaches won’t be asked to return next season, a source told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. Pitching coach Ethan Katz is expected to return.
