Gold Glove awards: Arenado grabs 10th, Guerrero among 1st-time winners

Major League Baseball announced the Gold Glove Award winners for the 2022 season on Tuesday.

The recipients were highlighted by a record 14 first-time winners who put together strong defensive campaigns at their respective positions, including Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena.

St. Louis Cardinals star Nolan Arenado continued his run of defensive dominance at third base, taking home a staggering 10th straight Gold Glove.

AL Catcher

Winner: Jose Trevino (1st), Yankees

Trevino joins Thurman Munson and Elston Howard as only the third Yankees catcher to win a Gold Glove. He led all catchers in defensive runs saved and framing runs saved.

Runners-up: Sean Murphy (OAK), Cal Raleigh (SEA)

AL First Base

Winner: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (1st), Blue Jays

Guerrero quickly developed into a quality defensive option at first base after making the move from third in 2020. The 23-year-old showed great flexibility and agility in picking a handful of errant throws out of the dirt.

Runners-up: Luis Arraez (MIN), Anthony Rizzo (NYY)

AL Second Base

Winner: Andres Gimenez (1st), Guardians

Gimenez ranked second among AL second baseman in defensive runs saved.

Runners-up: Jonathan Schoop (DET), Marcus Semien (TEX)

AL Third Base

Winner: Ramon Urias (1st), Orioles

Urias excelled at the position despite only having 10 career games of experience at third base entering 2022, according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com.

Runners-up: Matt Chapman (TOR), Jose Ramirez (CLE)

AL Shortstop

Winner: Jeremy Pena (1st), Astros

Pena looked like a seasoned vet as a rookie, leading AL shortstops with 15 defensive runs saved. The 25-year-old is the first rookie shortstop in history to win a Gold Glove, per Langs.

Runners-up: Xander Bogaerts (BOS), Carlos Correa (MIN)

AL Left Field

Winner: Steven Kwan (1st), Guardians

Kwan is the fifth rookie outfielder in history to win a Gold Glove. He led all left fielders with 12 outs above average.

Runners-up: Andrew Benintendi (KC/NYY), Brandon Marsh (LAA/PHI)

AL Center Field

Winner: Myles Straw (1st), Guardians

Straw had a strong statistical season, ranking inside the top five at the position in outs above average, outfield assists, and defensive runs saved.

Runners-up: Cedric Mullins (BAL), Michael A. Taylor (KC)

AL Right Field

Winner: Kyle Tucker (1st), Astros

Tucker has developed into one of the top defensive outfielders and posted a strong five outs above average in 2022.

Runners-up: Jackie Bradley Jr. (BOS/TOR), Max Kepler (MIN)

AL Utility

Winner: DJ LeMahieu (4th), Yankees

Runners-up: Whit Merrifield (KC/TOR), Luis Rengifo (LAA)​​​​​​

LeMahieu was a strong defender at three positions. The veteran registered strong outs-above-average numbers at first, second, and third base.

AL Pitcher

Winner: Shane Bieber (1st), Guardians

Bieber is the first pitcher in franchise history to take home a Gold Glove.

Runners-up: Jose Berrios (TOR), Jameson Taillon (NYY)

NL Catcher

Winner: J.T. Realmuto (2nd), Phillies

Realmuto led all catchers in average pop time and caught-stealing rate.

Runners-up: Travis d’Arnaud (ATL), Tomas Nido (NYM)

NL First Base

Winner: Christian Walker (1st), Diamondbacks

Walker led all first basemen in outs above average by a considerable margin.

Runners-up: Paul Goldschmidt (STL), Matt Olson (ATL)

NL Second Base

Winner: Brendan Rodgers (1st), Rockies

Rodgers handled a move over from shortstop very nicely and posted three outs above average in 2022.

Runners-up: Jake Cronenworth (SD), Tommy Edman (STL)

NL Third Base

Winner: Nolan Arenado (10th), Cardinals

Arenado is in elite company at third base, joining Mike Schmidt and Brooks Robinson as the only players with 10 or more Gold Gloves at the position.

Runners-up: Ke’Bryan Hayes (PIT), Ryan McMahon (COL)

NL Shortstop

Winner: Dansby Swanson (1st), Braves

Swanson led all shortstops with 20 outs above average.

Runners-up: Ha-Seong Kim (SD), Miguel Rojas (MIA)

NL Left Field

Winner: Ian Happ (1st), Cubs

Happ is the fourth outfielder and first left fielder in Cubs history to win a Gold Glove, according to Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune.

Runners-up: David Peralta (ARI/TB), Christian Yelich (MIL)

NL Center Field

Winner: Trent Grisham (2nd), Padres

Grisham led all center fielders with 17 outs above average and takes home his second Gold Glove in three years.

Runners-up: Victor Robles (WSH), Alek Thomas (ARI)

NL Right Field

Winner: Mookie Betts (6th), Dodgers

Betts has won six Gold Gloves over the last seven seasons. He racked up eight outfield assists and posted a solid five outs above average in 2022.

Runners-up: Juan Soto (WSH/SD), Daulton Varsho (ARI)

NL Pitcher

Winner: Max Fried (3rd), Braves

Fried takes home his third straight Gold Glove.

Runners-up: Tyler Anderson (LAD), Corbin Burnes (MIL)

NL Utility

Winner: Brendan Donovan (1st), Cardinals

Donovan made appearances at every infield position and both corner outfield spots. He edged out the unique Varsho, who opened eyes with strong defensive performances at catcher and in the outfield.

Runners-up: Tommy Edman (STL), Daulton Varsho (ARI)
